I’m so glad you found what works for you two! My husband and I have been married for four years and we have a joint checking and savings account, and separate checking accounts. We like things to be even, so we pay bills from our joint account and our allowance, which is spent on clothing and entertainment purchases, is kept in our personal accounts. It works great for us!

We have had a joint account since we said I do (and for what it is worth....we didn't smash cake either). Never even considered having separate accounts. Knowing my husband, if we did have separate accounts....it wouldn't have lasted. He would have botched his up and then I would have taken it away.

Cheers, Rae and Maria!

I am happy to report that we have since closed our account with the Megabank and <a href="http://www.climbingout.net/2010/04/goodbye-big-bank-hello-local-credit-union-thanks-to-quicken-dropping-us/" rel="nofollow">moved to a single checking account at a local credit union</a> with great service!

After more than a year of living with a joint account I can still emphatically say it was the absolute right thing for us!

I am going to have my husband read this! It's crazy, but we are a 4 account family and its nuts, my account, his 2 accounts, & our account. nothing is paid on time and we both are guilty of using the wrong account by accident at time. though we havnt racked up that much in overdraft, we sure payed more than our fair share .....thanks for posting this!

Seriously, over $1,000 a year in overdraft fees?? I am surprised it took nine years of that kind of abuse to make a change! We have a good bank with no fees and use our savings account as a back up to our checking and have never paid overdraft fees or bounced check fees or anything of the sort.
