The Gift of a Plan

I was given a timely book by Dave Ramsey this week and for whatever reason it clicks with us.  His ideas for personal budgeting and debt reduction make sense.

we are at wit’s end and ready to commit to anything other that what we have been doing!

“The Total Money Makeover” and its accompanying audio cds arrived from my mother on Monday.  She knew we weren’t happy with the financial situation we got ourselves in, but few other details.  I put it aside unsure what to make of it.

Thankfully The Wife picked it up and started reading.

I ended up listening to those audio cds to-and-from work all week.  Ramsey speaks simply and bluntly telling us things we already know, but have conveniently ignored:

  1. Stop borrowing
  2. build savings
  3. pay off all debt.

Tall orders, I know, but he lays them out in baby steps that seem manageable and as I said from the bottom of the hole we are at wit’s end and ready to commit to anything other that what we have been doing!

We are going to spend the weekend  doing our first budget and come up with a plan.

Cross your fingers.

Dear The Dad–your blog was recommended by a dear friend who claims it helps keep him motivated–and he was right! While we were not quite as rock bottom as your write, thanks to the bust of the 90′s, a divorce and a re-marriage, I discovered that life was too short to constantly be worrying about money (I have kids to focus my worrying on!). So we made a plan and now have added the Total Money Makeover to our existing plan which is really cranking up the heat and excitement around our debt elimination goal. I am forwarding your website to some colleagues who lead “Financial Fitness” programs in Universities because I think it’s an excellent peak into the future of some many young adults if they don’t get the clue now! Thanks thanks thanks for sharing!
